When people think about building muscle, they often picture bodybuilders or competitive athletes. In reality, muscle is one of the most important tissues in the human body, and increasing lean muscle mass benefits nearly everyone—regardless of age, gender, or fitness level.
Building muscle isn’t simply about looking more toned or improving athletic performance. It plays a vital role in your metabolism, bone health, mobility, balance, and even your ability to remain independent as you age.
At Inspire Seattle, we encourage our clients to think beyond aesthetics. The real value of strength training lies in how it helps you feel, move, and live every day.
Muscle Is More Than a Source of Strength
Muscle does far more than help you lift heavy objects.
Healthy muscle tissue supports:
- Everyday movement
- Joint stability
- Healthy posture
- Balance and coordination
- Metabolic function
- Bone health
- Injury prevention
Whether you’re climbing stairs, carrying groceries, hiking, or simply standing for long periods, your muscles are working continuously to support your body.
The stronger and healthier those muscles are, the easier these activities become.
Muscle Supports a Healthy Metabolism
One of the biggest advantages of building lean muscle is its effect on metabolism.
Muscle is metabolically active tissue, meaning it requires energy for maintenance. While no single workout will dramatically change your metabolism overnight, increasing lean muscle over time contributes to greater daily energy expenditure.
Perhaps more importantly, muscle plays a critical role in how your body processes nutrients and maintains healthy blood sugar regulation.
Combined with regular physical activity and balanced nutrition, maintaining healthy muscle mass supports overall metabolic health throughout life.
Healthy Aging Starts With Muscle
Beginning around age 30, adults naturally start losing muscle mass if they don’t regularly challenge their muscles through resistance training.
This gradual decline can contribute to:
- Reduced strength
- Slower movement
- Poor balance
- Increased risk of falls
- Loss of independence later in life
The encouraging news is that strength training can help slow—and in many cases partially reverse—this natural loss.
Building muscle today is one of the best investments you can make in your future mobility and independence.
Strong Muscles Protect Your Joints
Many people assume exercise wears out the joints. In reality, appropriately designed strength training often helps support them.
Strong muscles act as natural shock absorbers.
They help stabilize the knees, hips, shoulders, and spine by distributing forces more efficiently during movement.
When muscles become weak, joints often absorb more stress than they were designed to handle.
Building balanced strength throughout the body can help reduce unnecessary strain and improve overall movement quality.
Better Balance and Stability
Falls remain one of the leading causes of injury as adults age.
Fortunately, strength training does more than increase muscle—it also improves coordination, reaction time, and balance.
As muscles become stronger, they respond more effectively to changes in position, helping the body recover from slips, uneven surfaces, or unexpected movements.
This is one reason resistance training is consistently recommended as part of healthy aging.
Muscle Improves Everyday Life
One of the greatest benefits of strength isn’t found in the gym.
It’s found in everyday activities.
Building lean muscle can make it easier to:
- Carry groceries
- Lift children or grandchildren
- Travel with luggage
- Garden
- Climb stairs
- Play recreational sports
- Enjoy outdoor activities
These practical improvements often have a greater impact on quality of life than physical appearance alone.
Muscle Supports Bone Health
Your muscles and bones work together as a team.
Whenever muscles contract against resistance, they place healthy stress on the bones they attach to.
This mechanical loading encourages the body to maintain bone strength over time.
For this reason, resistance training is widely recognized as an important component of maintaining healthy bones throughout adulthood.
Confidence Comes From Capability
While many people begin exercising to change how they look, they often discover something even more rewarding along the way.
As strength improves, so does confidence.
Feeling physically capable changes how you approach everyday life.
You may find yourself more willing to try new activities, travel farther, hike longer trails, or simply move through your day with greater ease.
Strength has a way of building confidence from the inside out.
Why Lagree Is an Excellent Choice
Lagree provides a unique approach to building lean muscle because it combines:
- Slow, controlled resistance
- Continuous muscle engagement
- Core-focused movement
- Balance and stability training
- Low-impact exercise
Rather than emphasizing heavy lifting or explosive movements, Lagree challenges muscles through time under tension, encouraging balanced strength throughout the entire body.
This allows participants to build lean muscle while remaining mindful of joint health.
Because every class works multiple muscle groups simultaneously, clients receive an efficient full-body workout in just 40 minutes.
Build Strength That Lasts
Building muscle isn’t about chasing a certain look.
It’s about creating a body that supports you for years to come.
Whether you’re in your 20s or your 70s, increasing lean muscle can improve how you move, reduce your risk of injury, and help you continue doing the activities you love.
The strongest investment you can make isn’t in a piece of equipment or the latest fitness trend.
It’s in your own body.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Lagree Fitness?
Lagree is a workout method that blends strength training and Pilates-style movement in a high-intensity, low-impact format, typically performed on a Megaformer. Inspire Ballard and Queen Anne use Megaformers, while Inspire West Seattle uses Xformers.
I have never done Lagree. Should I do a private lesson first?
It depends on your fitness level. Many new students do fine in class (especially intro classes). If you have chronic back pain, painful joints, or a serious medical condition, a private session may be recommended first.
How do I schedule a private session?
Contact the studio by email and they can help you schedule your first private session. Private sessions are typically scheduled during non-class hours.
Do I need to arrive early for my first class?
Yes. New students should arrive about 10 minutes early to ask questions and complete any needed paperwork. If you arrive late for your first class, you may be asked to reschedule.
What should I bring to class?
Bring a positive attitude, a towel, and a water bottle. Grip socks are required. Wear comfortable clothes and avoid jewelry, strong perfumes, and using your phone during class.
How often should I practice?
A common recommendation is 3–4 times per week to allow recovery. Some people go more often, but too many sessions can reduce recovery and results—listen to your body.
What is the cancellation or reschedule policy?
Changes generally require at least 12 hours notice. Late cancels/reschedules can result in a fee (for unlimited members) or a lost class (for package holders).
How do I contact Inspire Seattle?
Email is typically the best way to reach the studio.
How does the waitlist work?
If you are added from the waitlist, you should receive an email notification (typically at least 12 hours before class). Make sure email notifications are enabled in your profile, and ensure you have classes available in your package.
Do you have intro offers or pricing options?
Yes. The studio offers intro specials and ongoing packages/memberships. Check the Pricing/Plans page for current options.
